"But
the principal inquiry still remains: Were not "the former days better
than these," with regard to virtue? Or, to speak more properly,
religion? This deserves a full consideration."
-John
Wesley, "Of Former Times," June 27, 1787

Meet Simon
Blessing:
a licensed preacher recently arrived from the eighteenth century to help
lead your “new Methodist meeting.” (Don’t forget: in Simon’s eyes, your
church doesn’t even exist
yet!) An encounter with a member of the Methodist society led him to a
new enthusiasm for his faith. He soon began leading class meetings, and
with determination, sought his license to preach—from Francis Asbury
himself! Simon’s “experience” is reflected in his preaching and
leadership, so you’ll not only hear his stories of his journey, but more
than a few of his opinions on Methodism—including what he might think of
any of your sanctuary’s “modern extravagances,” like organs and kneeling
rails. All of this is intended for a time of fun and fellowship, where
together we can look back upon the principles and practices that forged
the Methodist church we know and love today.
Simon is an invented
character based upon years of research into the personal, professional,
and spiritual lives of people in the eighteenth century. Facts,
statistics and stories of early Americans have forged Mister Blessing’s
path, from the religious melancholy of the 1760’s to the fundamental
excitement of the Enlightenment, and even the trials and triumphs of the
Methodists throughout the birth of the “United States.”
Testimony
Thank you so much for
helping to facilitate this possibility!
Please extend our
appreciation to Mr. Blessing for his wonderful ministry and his
commitment to share our UM historic experience.
Grant Buttermore, Pastor
First United Methodist
Church Tuckerton.
